History of Ahrend Oda.
The family business The Widow Ahrend and Son was founded in 1896 by Jacobus Ahrend. The Ahrend concern deals in office supplies and office furniture. Initially the company sold drawing tables, office supplies and instruments by mail order. This is why, from the very beginning, much attention was given to the styling of the catalogues (designed by André Vlaanderen, among others). During the 1930s, the company started to sell office furniture. This included furniture by the Oda company and The Circle. In 1967 Ahrend merged with companies and became the Ahrend Group NV. Furniture production became the core activity, and in this good styling was considered to be very important. Friso Kramer designed the Revolt chair, the Facet and Mehes systems, and school furniture. In 1971, Kramer became managing director and a design team including Henk Verkerke, Wijtse Rodenburg and Bas Pruyser was established. Since 1953, industrial journalist and graphical designer Ben Bos has been affiliated with Ahrend. Among the freelancers were designers Gerard Wernars and Charles Jongejans.
